Rare Two-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Pitcher, Stenciled "HAMILTON & JONES. / GREENSBORO. PA", circa 1875, ovoid pitcher with tall, flaring collar, the body decorated with a freehand "2" flanked by flourishes, above Hamilton & Jones maker's stenciling surrounding a stenciled foliate motif. Collar decorated with highly unusual, brushed scrollwork flanking a flourish at the spout. Freehand stripes to rim, below collar, and at base of pitcher. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. A rare form for this prolific Greensboro, PA partnership. Provenance: Collection of Lorren Lambert, Staunton, VA. A 6 3/4" sealed crack from rim, descending from a small chip to edge of spout. A sealed 4 1/2" crack from rim on side of pitcher. Very faint crazing to underside. H 13 3/8".
