Twelve-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Stenciled Eagle Motif, Stenciled "WILLIAMS AND REPPERT / GREENSBORO. PA.", circa 1885, large-sized, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, heavily-decorated with freehand stripes, dashes, and vining above Williams and Reppert maker's stenciling, accented with stenciled floral motifs, surrounding a stenciled bust of a spread-winged Federal eagle with shield. Base with freehand "12" flanked by flourishes, underscored by three cobalt stripes. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Provenance: From an over forty-year private collection. Some light wear to surface on front. A wide, top-to-bottom crack from rim on reverse. Wire secured around rim area. A thin, approximately 4 1/2" crack from rim on front. Some in-the-firing stacker marks to underside at edge. Some abrasions to surface of jar. H 22 1/2".
