Six-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, attributed to Hamilton & Pershing, Johnstown, PA, circa 1852-1855, large-sized, semi-ovoid jar with squared rim and ribbed lug handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a leafy stem bearing eight tulip buds. Heavy graduated cobalt dash decoration under each handle. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Underside of one handle impressed "6". The distinctive decoration on this jar leads to firm attribution to this desirable, short-lived Johnstown potting firm. Provenance: From an over forty-year private collection. Very large, professionally-restored U-shaped crack descending several inches from rim on one side, under one handle, and ascending opposite side to rim. Otherwise excellent condition. H 15 1/8".
