Rare and Fine Quart-Sized Stoneware Jar with Profuse Cobalt Floral Decoration, attributed to J. Swank & Co., Johnstown, PA, circa 1870, small-sized, ovoid jar with thin rim, decorated around its circumference with two sweeping vines bearing a total of four flower blossoms, the design separated by a diagonal graduated swag. The exceptional size and heavy brushwork on this jar suggest it may have been a specially-made or presentation item. It is the only example of its combined form, capacity, and decoration that we have seen by the Swank family. Very nice condition. Some very faint lines to base area, one of which continues across underside, partially visible on interior, less visible on exterior. A faint, approximately 1 1/2" hairline from rim. Areas of bubbling to cobalt. H 5" ; Diameter (across top) 5 3/8".
