Scarce Five-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Stenciled Eagle Motif, Stenciled "WILKINSON / & / FLEMING. / SHINNSTON. W. VA.", circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a stenciled design of a spread-winged Federal eagle, holding a banner in its beak, situated between Wilkinson & Fleming maker's stenciling. Bold-faced stenciled "5" at base. Two freehand stripes to shoulder. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Excellent condition with two minor, shallow chips to bottom edge and some light surface wear to reverse and one handle.
