Scarce and Fine Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Profuse Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Shinnston, WV origin, circa 1875, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, applied lug handles, and tooled banding at the midsection; decorated throughout the front with freehand straight and wavy stripes interspersed with three vines bearing graduated swags. Base with freehand "4" surrounded by cobalt spots and flanked by stripes. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. The style of vining on this jar leads to a firm attribution to Shinnston, WV. Superb decoration and condition. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with some minor surface wear and a small piece of kiln furniture adhered to underside.
