Unusual Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Eye Decoration, probably WV origin, circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated with a brushed design of a eye with lashes above a freehand "4" flanked by spots and dashes. Crudely-brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. The eye design on this jar may represent the fraternal organization, The Independent Order of the Odd Fellows, as an open eye is one of its key symbols. Provenance: From an over forty-year private collection. Jar is out-of-round. One handle chip. Some in-the-firing contact marks to surface.
