Very Rare Six-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt House Decoration, Stamped "C.W. BRAUN / BUFFALO, N.Y.", circa 1870, large-sized, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a house. Excellent detail throughout including nine windows, circular dormer, shingled roof, a door with pediment, chimney with chimney cap, and lightning rod with ball. Slip-trailed "6" to shoulder. One of the most artistic house designs that we have ever offered and an exceptionally rare decoration for this desirable Buffalo maker. A tight, top-to-bottom spider crack from rim on front, including one crack that extends through the peak of the roof. A second, tight 8" crack from rim, which joins the previous crack, forming a 4 1/2" x 4 1/2" reglued section descending from rim. This broken and reglued section includes coloring and some light filling along crack line, but none of this restoration touches the house. (The crack through the peak of the roof has been left unrestored.) This damage also includes an approximately 1" restored rim chip. Additionally, an 8 3/4" unrestored crack from rim on reverse. Some rust residue to shoulder on side and reverse, remaining from when a metal band secured the crock at one time. A 1 3/8" in-the-firing iron ping to rim on reverse. Chips to interior of rim. Some staining. H 13 3/8".
