Rare and Fine Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Flying Hawk Scene, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT.", circa 1855, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated with an artistic slip-trailed design of a spread-winged hawk or eagle, flying above a hill with pine tree to the bird's right and a split-rail fence in the foreground. A desirable and difficult-to-find Norton motif. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, consigned from the Northeastern U.S. An 8 1/4" inverted Y-shaped crack on reverse, with some additional faint lines beside it. Otherwise excellent condition with some light spots of staining.
