Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Water Cooler with Cobalt Floral Decoration, attributed to Philip Kabis, Shirleysburg, PA, circa 1870, ovoid cooler with tooled shoulder, flattened rim, and applied lug handles, the base with small circular bunghole, the surface covered in slip and decorated on the front and reverse with a wavy stem bearing flowers. Brushed cobalt "4" under both handles. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. This cooler is the first by this scarce Huntingdon County maker we have seen. Provenance: Purchased by the consignor in 1996 from Clark and Palmer Antiques, Purcellville, VA. A 1 1/2" chip on exterior of rim and two minor chips on interior o of rim.
