Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Foliate Decoration, Stamped "ATHERTON & TRICE / ALBANY", New York State origin, circa 1820-1826, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and applied lug handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a stylized foliate design featuring splayed leaves. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and handle terminals. A difficult-to-find Albany, NY mark. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. A thin 7 1/2" crack from rim. A 5" Y-shaped surface line on far left side of jar's front, not visible on interior. A long, thin drip of staining to front.
