Rare One-Gallon Vertical-Handled Stoneware Jar with Impressed Swag-and-Tassel Decoration, Stamped "COMMERAWS STONEWARE", Thomas Commeraw, Manhattan, NY, circa 1800, ovoid jar with footed base, heavily-tooled shoulder, and open vertical handles, decorated on the front and reverse with an impressed and cobalt-highlighted drape-and-tassel motif. Impressed on the front with maker's name, "COMMERAW.S", and on the reverse with the word, "STONEWARE", both highlighted in cobalt slip. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Desirable form with excellent color. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example from a fifty-year private collection. A 1 3/4" thin Y-shaped crack on underside, forming a 3 3/8" Y-shaped line on side of jar. Some exfoliation to surface, most or all of which occurred in the firing. A 2" inverted Y-shaped line from rim on reverse. A hairline through one handle. Small rim chips. Two small base chips and a small chip to raised tooling near base. H 9 1/2".
