Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Watch Spring Decoration, Manhattan, NY or NJ origin, circa 1775, ovoid jar with footed base and heavily-tooled shoulder, decorated on the front and reverse with a slip-trailed watch spring motif with figure 8 center. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals, with two additional large watch spring designs emanating from each lower handle terminal. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. Both handles fully restored. Restoration to rim. Heavy chipping to base. A spider line to surface on one side, not visible on interior as well as some surface crazing to base area, all of which appears to have occurred in the firing.
