Extremely Rare George Ohr Pottery Biloxi Maritime Plaque, Inscribed "OHR", Bilox, MS origin, circa 1895-1905, slab-constructed plaque depicting a view of the Mississippi Sound, featuring a hand-sculpted relief scene of a man in a sailboat with hoisted American flag, above an underwater scene depicting swimming fish, seashells, and a blue crab. A brown pelican flies to the right of the boat and other seabirds, two sailboats, and steamship are visible in the distance. Surface glazed in various shades of blue, green, black, brown, and white, including red, white, and blue highlights to the flag and pink highlights to the seashells. Incised "OHR" on a raised area of ocean floor at base. This recently rediscovered work was likely inspired by ocean views off of Biloxi Beach, as Ohr's shop was located just a few blocks from shore. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor from Jim Carpenter at his shop in Montague, NJ in the 1970s. An in-the-firing loss to corner, which is partially glazed over. Some additional small chips to edge. L 10 1/2" ; W 10".
