Rare Large-Sized Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Canning Jar with Stenciled Federal Shield and Freehand Decoration, attributed to Stephen H. Ward, West Brownsville, PA, circa 1870, tapered jar with tooled shoulder and semi-squared wax sealer rim, the front decorated with an elaborate stenciled Federal shield motif, flanked by highly-unusual vertical vining, decorated above and below with freehand stripes and dashes. An outstanding combination of stenciled and freehand decoration. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, acquired by the consignor decades ago. Heavy chipping to rim, a small area of which is glazed-over on reverse. A faint Y-shaped line on underside. Some staining to surface. H 10".
