Rare Canadian Stoneware Advertising Jug with Cobalt Bird Decoration, circa 1860, cylindrical jug with tooled shoulder and semi-squared spout, decorated with a boldly-slip-trailed design of a bird perched on a looping flourish, beside a large leaf. Slip-trailed "3" to shoulder. Impressed with the cobalt-highlighted merchant advertising, "A. FOSTER, / WINE & SPIRIT MERCHANT / PRINCESS STREET. / KINGSTON, C.W.". Though Canadian in origin, the decoration on this jug is inspired by designs found on pieces by William H. Farrar of Geddes, NY. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor approximately forty years ago. Excellent condition with some light bubbling to cobalt.
