Exceedingly Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Chicken Waterer with Cobalt Dove Decoration, Stamped "F.B. NORTON SONS / WORCESTER MASS", circa 1880, cylindrical jug with tooled spout thrown with a stopper-shaped finial, the base with carved semi-circular opening, the front decorated with a slip-trailed design of a dove perched on a branch underscored by a stylized banner and stylized flourish. Staining around the base indicates this waterer was used with a separate, circular tray as a trough. It is the first example of a chicken waterer from this desirable New England maker that we have seen. A 4 3/4" spider line to left side of jug. A few small flakes and a small iron ping to side. A 1 1/4" in-the-firing surface line and minor stone ping to opposite side of jug. A 1" flake to underside. Some shallow chipping to top edge of spout and finial. Some faint crazing to base. H 14 1/4".
