Two-Gallon Open-Handled Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Watch Spring Decoration, attributed to Abraham Mead, Greenwich, CT, circa 1790, ovoid jar with heavily-tooled shoulder and open loop handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a stylized cobalt watch spring motif edged in leafy accents. Cobalt highlights surrounding handle terminals, from which additional watch spring motifs descend. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. One side with broken and reglued pieces. An approximately 7" tight, sealed spider crack from rim on opposite side. Two minor base chips.
