Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Impressed Hearts Decoration, Old Bridge, NJ or Troy, NY origin, early 19th century, ovoid jar with footed base, heavily-tooled shoulder, and applied lug handles, decorated on the front and reverse with an impressed and cobalt-highlighted medallion featuring four hearts surrounded by a scalloped edge. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Pieces bearing this distinctive impressed hearts design have been found on sherds excavated at the Morgan / van Wickle Pottery of Old Bridge, NJ, as well as a few signed examples of Josiah Chapman stoneware from Troy, NY. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. A 1" rim chip. Other small rim chips, including a small, glazed-over chip to top of rim. Filled and colored chipping around base. Two shallow, unrestored base chips. A 3" hairline on underside, extending 4 1/4" up base of jar. A few minor in-the-firing iron pings to surface.
