Exceptional Five-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Decoration of a Hatted Gentleman, Ohio origin, circa 1880, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated with a slip-trailed folk art design of a man with mustache and bowler hat, wearing a buttoned coat and knickers, seated atop a tree stump flanked by grasses. Slip-trailed "5" above with looping lower terminal. One of the most finely-executed renderings of the human form that we have ever offered. Provenance: Ex-Allan Katz Americana. A 2 1/4" rim chip on side of crock. A 1 1/2" rim chip on interior of crock. A faint 5" Y-shaped line on underside, connecting to a short, faint spider line at base on front, not visible on interior. A 1 5/8" surface crack at base, possibly in-the-firing, extending 1" onto underside, not visible on interior. Two tiny nicks to one handle. Some light wear to opposite handle. A 1" salt drip at base on front. H 12 5/8".
