Exceptional Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Profuse Flowering Urn Motif, Stamped "R. BUTT / W. City, D.C.", circa 1835, ovoid jar with footed base, heavily-tooled shoulder, squared rim, and applied tab handles, decorated on the front with three conjoined groups of graduated leaves. Reverse with elaborate top-to-bottom decoration of a flowering plant emanating from an open-handled urn with cross-hatched interior. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. This jar ranks among the finest-decorated stoneware pieces known from Washington, D.C. and is the only example we have seen from this city incorporating an urn into the design. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example from a Virginia private collection. Salt drips to side of jar. Excellent condition. Two small base chips, one of which is glazed over. A chip to underside at edge with short Y-shaped hairline extending from it.
