Three Pieces of Rockingham County, VA Stoneware, second half 19th century, a one-gallon semi-ovoid jar, stamped "J. SILBER"; a half-gallon semi-ovoid jar with distinctive half-gallon capacity mark, attributed to Emanuel Suter; and an unsigned spittoon with rectangular opening at shoulder. Literature: Silber jar illustrated in Comstock, The Pottery of the Shenandoah Valley Region, p. 467. Silber jar in excellent condition with a few rim chips, a 1 1/8" base, networks of tight hairlines to body, extending from underside, and a few short lines from rim. Unsigned Suter jar with a 3" hairline from rim and some light staining. Spittoon with significant painted restoration to entire surface, as well as unrestored edge chips.
