Very Rare Shenandoah Valley Redware Mug with Mocha Seaweed Decoration, possibly Solomon Bell, Strasburg, VA, circa 1875, tapered mug with footed base and unusual bulged shoulder, the surface decorated with mottled streaks of copper and cream-colored slip over a dark orange ground, featuring copper "seaweed" motifs in the English mochaware style throughout. The tapered form of this mug is consistent with the majority of signed or attributed Solomon Bell mugs known. Its use of mocha-style seaweed decoration is also found on a variety of pieces from his shop. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, from a fifty-year private collection. Very nice condition with minor wear to rim, light wear to handle, and a small chip to underside at edge. H 4 1/8".
