Unusual One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Impressed Decoration, Stamped "COMMERAWS / STONEWARE", Thomas Commeraw, Manhattan, NY, circa 1815, ovoid jar with footed base, tooled shoulder, and open loop handles, decorated on the front and reverse with an impressed and cobalt-highlighted drape-and-tassel motif. Impressed "COMMERAWS" on front and "STONEWARE" on reverse. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and handle terminals. This jar, probably made by Commeraw during a later period, is fashioned with horizontal open handles, as opposed to the usual vertical handles found on Commeraw jars of one-gallon and one-half-gallon sizes. The impressed tassel motif is also different from most Commeraw pieces we have seen, made in the form of an open-ended ellipse, as opposed to the potter's usual tripartite design. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, from a fifty-year private collection. Both handles restored. Significant base chips, most or all of which appear to be in-the-firing. A 1 1/2" chip to top of rim. Adhesive residue to surface from use. H 9 1/2".
