Four-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "W.H. FARRAR & CO. / GEDDES, NY", circa 1860, semi-ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-squared rim, decorated with a large brushed and slip-trailed design of a flowering plant bearing three cobalt-highlighted blossoms. Slip-trailed "4" beside decoration. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark. A 1 1/4" in-the-firing contact mark to reverse, including a piece of adhered clay. This flaw is adjacent to a 1 1/8" filled and colored area, which covers a small hole. A series of in-the-firing chips to left of decoration. A 1 1/8" in-the-firing chip to surface below one handle near base. A few base chips. A 4 1/2" spider crack on underside, continuing 4" up reverse of churn. A 2 1/2" hairline from rim on reverse. Two hairlines from rim on front, measuring 3" and 2 1/4". Some typical wear to interior of rim. A small in-the-firing chip on top of rim. A 7/8" worn area to rim on reverse. Some staining.
