Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Incised Pheasant Decoration, attributed to the Crolius or Remmey Family, Manhattan, NY origin, circa 1800, highly-ovoid jug with semi-rounded spout and ribbed handle, decorated with an incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a pheasant with crest, ringed neck, and detailed wing, standing on mound. This jug was made at the same pottery as the iconic "Henry Edoson" bird flask, now in the Weitsman Collection at the New York State Museum in Albany, NY. Provenance: Property of a New York State collector. Restored cracks throughout. A small restored spot to center of bird's neck. Some small spots of restoration to handle. Underside and side of handle with a sealed in-the-firing line. In-the-firing chips to top of spout. Some light chipping to ridge along handle, most or all of which occurred in the firing. Two minor, colored chips to underside at edge.
