Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Incised and Brushed Floral Decorations, Manhattan, NY origin, circa 1800, ovoid jar with footed base, tooled shoulder, and open loop handles, decorated on one side with an incised and cobalt-highlighted floral design featuring open-centered petals, and on the reverse with a brushed flower with oval petals. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. This jar's employment of incised and brushed designs on opposing sides is highly unusual. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, from a fifty-year private collection. A 1 1/4" Y-shaped surface line on side of jar below handle, not visible on interior. A 2" hairline from rim on side of jar. A faint 1 1/4" line on underside, continuing 3 1/4" up base on brush-decorated side. A 5 1/2" inverted Y-shaped line under one handle, not visible on interior. Minor rim chips and a small in-the-firing iron ping to top of rim.
