Scarce Miniature Stoneware Presentation Bowl, Inscribed "Esau Scott, Esq.", probably West Virginia origin, circa 1850-1880, tapered bowl with tooled shoulder and angled rim, the shoulder incised with the cobalt-highlighted name, "Esau Scott, Esq.". This bowl was probably made for Esau Powell Scott (1845-1919), who was born in Washington County, Pennsylvania, and settled in St. Marys, West Virginia, by the mid-1870's. The close proximity of St. Marys to the well-known pottery town of Parkersburg, West Virginia, offers the possibility that this bowl was made there. Interior with chocolate-brown Albany slip glaze. Excellent condition with an in-the-firing 5/8" rim chip, which is glazed over, and a small post-firing rim chip. H 2 5/8" ; Diameter 4 1/8".
