Outstanding Stoneware Vase with Cobalt Flowering Urn Decoration, WV origin, circa 1865-1885, ovoid vase with tall collar and crimped rim, decorated on the body with a brushed design of a flowering plant emanating from a stylized urn. Additional decoration around the body of an undulating vine bearing a blossom with splayed petals, along with an additional flower blossom to right of urn. Flowering vine decoration to collar and cobalt stripe at base of collar. Interior with Albany slip glaze. The flowers on this vase are loosely-related to a floral design found on a Nathaniel Clark, Parkersburg, WV jar sold in Crocker Farm, Inc.'s November 6, 2010 auction. The exterior clay body as well as the smooth unglazed gray clay underside are highly reminiscent of stoneware made at the A.P. Donaghho pottery of Parkersburg, WV, during the fourth quarter of the 19th century. While atypical of Donaghho's work in form and decoration, we believe this vase was likely made at his site or at another nearby pottery. Exceptional, artistic form. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, recently found in Virginia. Chips to crimping. Otherwise excellent condition. H 6".
