Fine Twelve-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Freehand Cobalt and Stenciled Eagle Decorations, Stenciled "Star Pottery", Hamilton & Jones, Greensboro, PA, circa 1875, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated with a large brushed fuchsia vine design below straight and wavy stripes and a scalloped line design. Decorated below with additional straight and wavy stripes above a stenciled eagle with banner, inscribed "Star Pottery". Base with stenciled "12", flanked by graduated freehand dashes, above two wavy stripes. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. A finely-decorated example of Western PA stoneware. A sealed curving crack extending from on reverse to shoulder area under one handle. A 10 3/4" crack on underside, curving as a long curved crack, extending several inches up reverse side. Area of exfoliation to bottom half of jar on reverse, extending onto side of jar at base. One handle chip. H 22 1/4".
