Exceptional Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Stenciled Cobalt Eagle Decoration, Stenciled "A.P. Donaghho. / Fredericktown, Pa." and Stamped "DONAGHHO / Fredericktown / Wash. Co. PA", circa 1870, ovoid jug with tooling to shoulder and spout, decorated with a stenciled design of a Federal eagle with shield, clutching olive branches and arrows. Stenciled "A.P. Donaghho, / Fredericktown, / Pa." above eagle. Stenciled bands of foliate decoration to shoulder and base. Impressed at the shoulder with the very rare maker's mark, "DONAGHHO / Fredericktown Wash Co PA". The employment of a stamped and stenciled signature set this example apart from the vast majority of Donaghho stoneware pieces known. Likely made during a transition period shortly after the creation of his Fredericktown stencil, this jug is the only example of its kind we have seen. The inclusion of the Federal eagle, an iconic Western Pennsylvania design, adds strong decorative appeal to an otherwise extremely rare piece. This jug easily ranks among the finest works by this well-known Western Pennsylvania and West Virginia potter that we have ever handled. Excellent condition with a small spout chip and minor, glazed-over spout nick. H 14".
