Rare Slip-Decorated Redware Plate, Inscribed "William & Mary", Norwalk, CT origin, circa 1840, with coggled edge the interior decorated in ornate yellow-slip script with the words, "William & Mary". A rare and desirable Norwalk inscription, featuring dramatic loops to the "W" in "William". Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, which surfaced in Virginia. Two shallow edge chips, measuring 1 1/8" and 3/4". chip and a few other minor edge chips. An in-the-firing 4" surface line from edge, not visible on underside. A few short, glazed-over lines to surface. Typical minor surface wear. Diameter 12 1/4".
