Important Oversized Stoneware Face Jug with Alkaline Glaze, Incised "B.B. CRAIG", Stamped Twice "B.B. CRAIG / VALE, N.C.", early fourth quarter 20th century, approximately eight-gallon, ovoid jug with two applied open handles at the shoulder, the front decorated with an applied clay face with large eyebrows and ears, bulging eyes, a Roman nose with pierced nostrils, and a mouth with china teeth. Combed incising to eyebrows as well as upper and lower lips, forming a mustached and goatee. Surface covered in a mottled green alkaline glaze with appealing glass runs and rutile throughout. Reverse shoulder with rare hand-incised signature, "B.B. CRAIG", in large capital letters. Underside impressed twice with B.B. Craig maker's mark. This museum-quality example of Craig pottery is the largest face jug by this maker that we have seen, and arguably one of his greatest works to ever come to auction. Mint condition. H 22".
