Very Rare Eight-Gallon Monumental Stoneware Jar with Incised Fish and Tree Decoration, Inscribed "Maid by / William North / April 14 1833", Ohio origin, ovoid jar with semi-squared rim and applied lug handles, decorated with a well-detailed, incised design of a fish with striped body and light cobalt highlights throughout. Reverse decorated with an incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a flowering tree. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Underside incised with the large inscription, "Maid by / William North / April 14 1833" Literature: Illustrated in Greer, American Stonewares, p. 234. Provenance: Ex-Collection Georgeanna Greer. Significant restoration to the underside, which extends through to the interior, brings into question the authenticity of the incised inscription on the underside. Additional significant restoration to bottom third of jar. Some restoration to rim. Restoration to surface of shoulder area involving incised tree design. A long, thin unrestored horizontal crack at midsection. H 18".
