Two-Gallon Vertical-Handled Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Watch Spring Decoration, Manhattan, NY or New Jersey origin, circa 1775, ovoid jar with footed base, heavily-tooled shoulder, and applied vertical handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a brushed watch spring motif featuring smaller watch springs at the center. Additional watch spring motifs emanating from the lower handle terminals. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals and a cobalt stripe at shoulder. Desirable form and decoration. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, from a fifty-year collection. Heavy shallow chipping to base. Small, shallow chips to rim. An in-the-firing iron ping below one handle. A minor handle nick. Some remnants of darkish residue to shoulder and handles.
