Half-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Watch Spring Decoration, Manhattan or New Jersey origin, circa 1775, ovoid jug with tooled spout and heavily-tooled, footed base, decorated with a slip-trailed watch spring motif including a stylized foliate design emanating from the center. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Desirable size. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. Heavy chipping to base. Some in-the-firing flaws, including iron pings, one of which includes a 1/2" glazed-over chip on reverse. Some in-the-firing grittiness to cobalt. H 10 3/4".
