Two Pieces of Iron-Oxide-Decorated Stoneware, Stamped "W. STATES", Stonington, CT origin, circa 1815, a two-gallon churn and one-gallon ovoid jug, both with iron-oxide slip highlights to the handle terminals. Churn with unusual mixture of clay, producing a scroddled appearance. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market lot, purchased by the consignor decades ago. Churn with a 7 1/2" crack from rim on front, a 4" crack from rim on reverse, two sealed rim chips on reverse, significant filled areas to base, not extending through to interior, lines throughout underside, and an in-the-firing clay separation on interior, not visible on exterior. Jug with base chips, in otherwise excellent condition.
