Scarce Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Impressed and Incised Decoration, Stamped "ARMSTRONG / & / WENTWORTH / NORWICH", CT origin, circa 1814-1834, ovoid jar with heavily-tooled shoulder and applied lug handles, decorated on the reverse with an incised and cobalt-highlighted drape-and-tassel motif, accented with impressed circles. Front impressed with the cobalt-highlighted maker's mark, "ARMSTRONG / & / WENTWORTH / NORWICH". Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Desirable Federal-period incising in the Thomas Commeraw style, uncommon for this maker. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. Very nice condition with a chip above one handle, some light staining, and a 1" contact mark to one side.
