Rare Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Gemel with Incised Bird Decoration, Stamped Twice "STEDMAN / & / SEYMOUR. / NEW-HAVEN", CT origin, circa 1830, pair of conjoined, ovoid jugs with semi-rounded mouths and ribbed central handle, each decorated with an incised, impressed, and cobalt-highlighted design of a bird. Brushed cobalt highlights at the juncture of the jugs and surrounding the handle terminals. Impressed on each jug with the cobalt-highlighted maker's mark, "STEDMAN / & / SEYMOUR. / NEW-HAVEN". Desirable form with strong decoration. Provenance: Property of a New York State collector; Sotheby's, 22 January 2004, lot #907. Fine overall condition. Two small adjacent chips to one spout. Two minor base chips and a minuscule base nick. A 1/2" in-the-firing surface chip on reverse of jug. H 9".
