Extremely Rare Three-Gallon Lidded Stoneware Jar with Incised Bird Decoration, Stamped "R. SEYMOUR / TROY", New York State origin, circa 1830, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, flared collar, and applied lug handles, decorated with an incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a bird perched on a stylized leaf, flanked by two brushed tulip motifs. Reverse with lightly-brushed cobalt looping line flourish with cross-hatched interior. Brushed cobalt highlights to maker's mark and handle terminals. This jar is the first piece we have offered bearing the maker's mark, "R. SEYMOUR / TROY", which may have been modified from an Israel Seymour stamp, as the letter R is raised higher than the word "SEYMOUR". This jar's inclusion of freehand floral decoration flanking the bird is additionally an unusual treatment. Includes loosely-fitting, salt-glazed stoneware lid, possibly a later association with the jar. Provenance: Property of a New York State collector. Literature: Discussed in Broderick and Bouck. Pottery Works: Potteries of New York State's Capital District and Upper Hudson Region. London and Toronto. Associate University Presses, 1995, p. 138. Exfoliation to midsection on reverse. Small chips and wear to interior of rim. Minor chips to exterior of rim. Some staining. Lid in excellent condition.
