Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Impressed Hearts Decoration, probably Josiah Chapman, Troy, NY, possibly Morgan and Van Wickle, Old Bridge, NJ, early 19th century, ovoid jar with footed base, tooled shoulder, and applied lug handles, decorated on the front and reverse with an impressed design of four hearts surrounded by a scalloped border. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. Spider crack on underside, extending up to shoulder on one side. A reglued 1 3/8" rim chip. A thin 5 1/2" crack from rim. An in-the-firing crack to one handle terminal. An in-the-firing contact mark including some surface chipping below decoration on one side. A 3/4" in-the-firing chip / contact mark to one handle, along with a 1 5/8" in-the-firing chip / contact mark below. A shallow 1" in-the-firing chip to bottom edge.
