Two-Gallon New York City Stoneware Advertising Crock with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "M.A. POCKRIDGE / 856 6TH AVE / NEW YORK", New York State origin, circa 1880, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a fan-tailed bird perched on a stylized branch. Cobalt highlights to advertising and capacity mark. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, from a long-term private collection. Missing half of one handle, an in-the-firing loss, which is glazed over. A 1 1/2" chipped area to base. A 2 1/2" hairline at base on front, extending a few inches onto underside. A 2 1/2" hairline from rim on reverse. Exfoliation to underside. A small flake to base.
