Very Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Freehand Cobalt Inscription, "July 4(?) 1850 (?) / Strasburg, VA", Stamped "S. BELL", Samuel Bell, Strasburg, VA origin, circa 1850, ovoid jar with tall collar and applied lug handles, featuring the brushed cobalt inscription "July 4, 1850 / Strasburg, Va" on the front, below an "S. BELL" maker's mark. Reverse with brushed floral decoration. This jar is the first example of Samuel Bell stoneware we have seen featuring a freehand cobalt inscription. Oversalting to the jar, which makes the cobalt inscription difficult to read and the floral decoration faint. A few chips to underside at edge. A long curving crack from rim on front, extending onto side of jar under handle. A shallow chip to top of rim. A small chip to interior of rim and a minor nick to exterior of rim.
