Six-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar, Stamped "CHANDLER MAKER", Edgefield, SC, circa 1850, ovoid jar with semi-rounded rim and large, arching tab handles, the surface covered in a colorful blue-green alkaline glaze and decorated on the front and reverse with a kaolin-slip drape and looping line motif. Additional kaolin-slip looping line decoration under each handle. Appealing alkaline glaze runs to shoulder area. Impressed on shoulder with "CHANDLER MAKER" maker's mark. This example survives in excellent, essentially as-made condition, very difficult to find among utilitarian Edgefield ware. H 18 1/2".
