Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Bird-on-Stump Decoration, Stamped "N. CLARK &, Co / LYONS", New York State origin, circa 1850, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, flared collar, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a bird with heavily-spotted body, perched on a leafy stump. Slip-trailed "2" to shoulder. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark. Excellent, folky decoration, difficult-to-find by this maker. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, from a long-term private collection. A rim chip. A tight 6" inverted Y-shaped line on side of jar, not visible on interior. A faint 2 1/2" Y-shaped line at base on opposite side of jar, not visible on interior. A 3 3/4" in-the-firing surface line to underside, not visible on interior. A minor in-the-firing contact mark at base on front. Two small in-the-firing iron pings on side of jar. An in-the-firing separation to underside of one handle. In-the-firing mottling to clay to base and side.
