Extremely Rare Five-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Stenciled Star and Freehand Floral Motifs, Stenciled "FROM / PERSHING, DUDGEON & CO / ST. CLAIR STATION / PA", Bradenville, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, origin, circa 1870, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, featuring the stenciled inscription, "FROM / PERSHING - - DUDGEON & CO / ST. CLAIR STATION / PA.", surrounded by eighteen stenciled stars of two different sizes. Shoulder decorated with a large script "5" with scrolled end, flanked by stylized tulips, below a wavy line and series of dashes. Base with delicately-brushed flowering vine motif. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Cobalt is applied over a slip-coated surface, with the potter's fingerprints visible on the underside. A wonderfully-decorated example of Western PA stoneware, featuring appealing freehand and stenciled decorative elements. Pershing and Dudgeon's stoneware, stencilled to advertise its proximity to St. Clair Station on the Pennsylvania Railroad, was produced in Bradenville, near Latrobe, and is exceptionally rare. Indeed, this jar is the first bearing stenciling for their company that we have ever offered. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market, recently-discovered example. Excellent condition with a minor handle chip and small, glazed-over handle chip. H 14 3/4".
