Exceptional Western PA Miniature Stoneware Presentation Pitcher, Beaver County, PA origin, third quarter 19th century, elegantly-potted ovoid pitcher with narrow base and flaring, thin-walled collar, incised across the front with the name "Hannah Couch," accented in cobalt and flanked by two cobalt leaves. Collar and handle decorated entirely with brushed cobalt. This pitcher was very probably made for the Hannah Couch who appears in a Couch family genealogy as the second cousin of New Brighton, Pennsylvania, potter, Edwin Couch. Born two years before Edwin and living in nearby Armstrong County until at least early adulthood, Hannah probably received this little pitcher as a gift from her cousin; and indeed its exceptional blue-gray contrast is consistent with, for instance, an eagle butterprint attributed to Edwin Couch and illustrated in Phil Schaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners, pg. 140. A particularly-fine Western PA stoneware miniature. Provenance: Dr. Raymond L. Owen Collection. Excellent condition with a small darkened rim chip. H 2 5/8".
