Very Rare Small-Sized Stoneware Jar with Vertical Handles and Cobalt Watchspring Decoration, attributed to Abraham Mead, Greenwich, CT, circa 1790, ovoid jar with footed base, heavily-tooled shoulder, and ribbed vertical handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a slip-trailed watchspring design underscored by a "fish scale" motif. Lower handle terminals decorated with additional slip-trailed watchsprings. Excellent maker, size, form, and decoration. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago; previously purchased directly from the Mead family. A 4" restored section to rim. A base chip. A minor in-the-firing separation at one lower handle terminal. H 7 1/2".
