Rare Small-Sized Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Watchspring Decoration, Manhattan, NY or Cheesequake, NJ origin, fourth quarter 18th century, ovoid jar with footed base, tooled shoulder, and slightly-flared rim, decorated with three slip-trailed watchspring motifs. Excellent size and desirable early-period decoration. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, from a fifty-year private collection. Heavy chipping to base. Some short, faint lines to base area, likely in-the-firing, all typical of pieces of this age and origin. Three small rim chips. Some lines and crazing to top of rim, presumably in-the-firing. Three small flakes to shoulder. An in-the-firing, 5/8" surface near base, beside a small in-the-firing contact mark. A 1 1/2" piece of adhered clay to shoulder. H 7 3/4".
