Rare and Fine Small-Sized Stoneware Jar with Vertical Handles and Cobalt Watchspring Decoration, Manhattan, NY or Cheesequake, NJ origin, fourth quarter 18th century, ovoid jar with footed base, heavily-tooled shoulder, and applied vertical handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a slip-trailed watchspring design accented with a scalloped line above and below. Additional watchspring decorations emanating from the lower handle terminal. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Excellent size, form, and decoration. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, from a fifty-year private collection. Excellent condition with two vertical surface lines extending from base, one measuring 3 1/2" and the other measuring 3", which do not extend through to the interior. Also, three surface lines on interior, which are not visible on the exterior, and some faint crazing to shoulder, not visible on the interior. All surface lines are typical of pieces of this age and origin, and likely occurred in the firing. Remarkably, this 18th century piece survives with no chips. H 8".
